If you truly want to make things easier on yourself, it's always a great idea to make a "Household Inventory List". Writing down/creating a spreadsheet and/or a video of your household belongings and having it stored in a safe place will make filing a claim on your homeowner's insurance a lot less stressful!
Just remember, speak to your insurance agent before actually filing a claim with your insurance company. It may be cheaper and easier to replace the items yourself rather than paying a deductible and having a claim filed on your homeowner's insurance policy that will stay on your record for the next five years and impact your future insurance premiums.
Start room-by-room by making a list of your belongings. Taking a picture/video of each item along with a make/model # or serial #/ID number that will also be an added benefit. Here is a list of what we suggest including in your spreadsheet:
1 - Room (livingroom, kitchen, master bedroom, etc)
2 - Item/Description
3 - Make/Model #
4 - Serial #/ID Number
5 - Date Purchased (keep the receipt stapled to the owner's manual)
6 - Where Purchased
7 - Purchase Price
8-Estimated Current Value
9-Notes (anything specific about it that might help an insurance adjuster if a claim is filed in the future)
10- Photo (take a photo of each item (maybe it's just the more expensive items such as T.V.'s, furniture, household appliances)
Having a spreadsheet or video to reflect on later will you save you and your insurance agent and insurance company a lot of time if a claim is ever filed. Having proof of everything is an awesome tool to have in back pocket. If you don't want to keep a spreadsheet I would suggest taking a video of each room with the belongings in it periodically and saving it on a portable hard-drive you can store in a fireproof/water resistant safe.
** When purchasing new items for your home try to remember to keep the receipts attached to the owner's manual and store them in a 3-ring binder so you can easily access them for a warranty issue or insurance claim in the future.
