FACT: The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them - according to the NFPA
I have to be honest, I had never heard of cleaning out my dryer vent hose from the inside of the house to the outside of the house in all my years of being an adult. I always clean out the dryer lint trap after each cycle. I didn't know you should clean more than just that until I hired a friend to wash my windows several years ago. You are probably thinking what in the world does washing windows have to do with dryer vents? I thought the same thing when he confronted me about it. So he explained to me that lint that doesn't stop at the lint vent actually transfers past the vent, through the dryer hose and usually gets stuck in there. Ha! I did not know that.....it's true, you learn new things every day!
He mentioned he could clean it to help prevent a potential house fire. I said sure, but I want to see what comes out and how much lint was actually in there. Sure enough I watched him hook up his tools and vacuum and clean all the nooks and crannies in the dryer and from the inside of the house where the dryer hose attaches to the dryer and all the way outside through the vent hose in the wall. Then he went outside and did the same thing back into the house. I was amazed at just how much "crap" was in there. After he was done I was amazed at how much faster our clothes dried in the dryer after that. Picture a "flashing" light bulb going off in my head at that moment....less dry time, less electricity, less power bill! I save my house from a potential house fire, I save energy (good for the planet), I save on my power bill (good for my budget) and my laundry is done faster....it's a WIN, WIN!!!
I went online and started researching if dryer lint can cause house fires and sure enough it was the cause of many per year. Since then our friend has moved and yes......now my hubby and I wash our own windows and we bought our own kit to clean out our dryer and dryer vents by ourselves. It really isn't hard and only takes about 15 minutes to get the job done and for me it's completely satisfying! You see......I'm a total clean freak...I mean total clean freak. My realtor walked in my first house we were listing for sale and she asked me if my house was a museum. Everything has a place and that place is to be put away, given away or thrown away!
Enough about me and my cleanliness.... if you haven't cleaned out your dryer lint trap, your dryer and your dryer vent now is the time! Add it to your do list for Spring Cleaning! You can buy a "Dryer Vent Cleaning Kit" for under $20.00 at Home Depot. Now if that isn't the best $20.00 you've spent to protect your house from a potential house fire besides a fire extinguisher I don't what is. According to the National Fire Protection Associates, nearly 16,000 home clothes dryer fires were reported each year from 2010-2014.
Happy Spring Cleaning, Happy Dryer Vent Cleaning.....
